The Franschhoek Community

The FHRPA is one of many civic organisations that help shape life in Franschhoek. The success of the valley depends on these groups working together, whilst respecting the independence and key focus area of each entity.

While the FHRPA engages with municipal authorities and other levels of government, it also works with local partners, business, tourism associations, and other community groups. By working collaboratively and sharing information, the FHRPA aims to support decisions that respect Franschhoek’s heritage, serve residents, and strengthen the local economy.

Civic bodies:

  • Franschhoek Wine Valley : the official tourism body and custodian of the "Franschhoek" brand, acting as a non-profit association that markets the valley as a premier destination for wine, food, heritage, and lifestyle experiences.
  • Franschhoek Landbou Vereniging : collaboration of the local farming community.
  • Franschhoek Interest Group (FIG): Community advocacy group protecting sense of place of Franschhoek and residents interests in recreational use of state land.

 

Environmental / Conservation:

  • Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve : part of the UNESCO-declared Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve
  • Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve : CWBR was registered in 2007 with UNESCO as South Africa’s 5th biosphere reserve and covers 322 032 ha in the Western Cape Winelands with a unique biodiversity including Cape Fold Mountains, deep river valleys, exceptional fynbos, rolling hills, commercial forests, world-renowned wineries, small agricultural settlements and beautiful historical towns.
  • The Franschhoek Conservancy : Community-driven initiative focused on protecting the natural environment of the Franschhoek Valley, including wildfire management, riverine health, invasive species control and sustainable land management.

 

Community Support & Social Development:

  • FRANCO : Franschhoek Resource and Network Coordinating Organization is a registered non-profit coordinating support for local social development projects, education, skills training and community upliftment.
  • Franschhoek Hospice : Provides holistic palliative and chronic care to patients and families in the Franschhoek valley.
  • Franschhoek Hospitality Academy & Learning Centre : Training and skills development in hospitality to support access to employment in the local tourism sector.
  • Isabelo Charity : Early childhood education and support for at-risk children, including meals, health checks and family support.
  • Kusasa Project : Their mission is to provide a top-tier ‘Whole Child Education’ through their accredited independent primary school, the Kusasa Academy, located in the heart of Franschhoek.
  • The Langrug Soup Kitchen : Community-based feeding scheme providing nutritious meals to children, elderly and vulnerable residents.

 

Animal Welfare:

  • Franschhoek SPCA : Local branch of the national SPCA network focused on preventing cruelty to animals and providing care and shelter for animals in distress.
  • SHARF : Safe Hands Animal Rescue Franschhoek is a non profit organisation driven to assist the Franschhoek community with animal rescue.

Sports & Hobbies

  • Franschhoek Tennis Club : A long-established community tennis club with social play, coaching, junior programmes and year-round activities. Open to beginners through competitive players.
  • Rickety Bridge Padel & Social Club : Padel courts and a social environment at Rickety Bridge Estate — ideal for both sport and leisure in the wine valley setting.
  • Franschhoek Bowling Club : A community bowling club (lawn bowls) with social membership, casual play and events (also known as The Country Club at The Franschhoek Bowling Club).
