FHRPA Membership

If you call Franschhoek home, we'd love to welcome you as a member of the FHRPA. When you register, you're not just joining an association,  you're adding your voice to a community that cares deeply about Franschhoek's future.

Like many beautiful places in the Western Cape, Franschhoek is growing and changing. While this brings exciting opportunities, it also means we need to work together to protect what makes our valley so special. Whether you can contribute a little or a lot, your involvement helps ensure Franschhoek remains the place we all love.

How we work

FHRPA is registered as a non-profit company. The work of the Association is accomplished by an elected EXCO working closely together to facilitate communication between various interest groups and the government. EXCO members serve on a pro-bono basis and are supported by residents who serves on action groups and committees.

The EXCO deals primarily with operational issues related to daily living in the community, such as traffic, parking, security, waste collection and recycling, and other municipal services. The Heritage and Land Use Committee deals with physical issues related to the character of the village and its surroundings. The FHRPA works hard to help balance the needs of the tourist and agricultural sectors that underpin the local economy and the quality of life of the community at large.

What we do

FHRPA is registered with Heritage Western Cape in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act as the conservation body for the Franschhoek Valley and, as an interest group, with Stellenbosch Municipality. We meet regularly with the Mayor; Ward Councillors; municipal traffic, planning, and engineering departments; and Franschhoek Wine Valley to address issues affecting the wider community. We provide feedback to the Stellenbosch Municipality on draft policies and regulations. We provide opinions to the Municipality and to Heritage Western Cape on applications for re-zoning, refurbishment, and new construction. We interface with neighbourhood interest groups and help them to formulate action plans when required.

Membership

Whilst membership is open to those who are the registered owners of property in the Geographic Area, members can  authorise representatives (tenants, neighbours, service providers and fellow ratepayers) to act on their behalf.

Do you have any ideas or concerns?

If you are experiencing problems related to traffic safety, noise pollution, security, or any other issues, please contact us. By consolidating the complaints and suggestions of residents and business owners, we are able to help frame and present possible solutions as part of a coordinated, collective effort. This approach tends to carry more weight with government than individual actions.

Do you plan to build or refurbish?

If you make an appointment with us before you start preparing design documents, our architectural team can offer suggestions that will ultimately save you time and money. In the early stages of the design process, we can help you identify the key aspirations and requirements of current planning regulations and policies, thus streamlining the approval process that follows.

Would you like to help?

If you have any ideas that you feel can improve the experience of living and working in the village, please send us your suggestions. Alternatively you might consider serving on one of our committees or action groups, which meet once a month, volunteering your time for tasks requiring specialised expertise, or becoming a sponsor by making a cash contribution to support our operational costs.
